Recalling the Downing Street Minutes

By Ray McGovern
July 24, 2009

Seven years ago this week, then British Prime Minister Tony Blair gathered his top national security advisers at 10 Downing St. to hear a report from U.K. intelligence chief Richard Dearlove, just back in London from face-to-face talks with then-CIA Director George Tenet in Washington.

*Matthew Rycroft, aide to Blair foreign policy guru David Manning, was taking minutes at the Downing Street meeting on July 23, 2002, minutes he immediately circulated to Blair and other participants. The minutes observed quite bluntly that “Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”

Enter an unknown patriotic truth-teller who eventually gave a copy of those minutes to London’s Sunday Times which, after performing due diligence regarding their provenance, published them on May 1, 2005. Blair himself has been careful not to dispute the authenticity of what then became known as the “Downing Street Minutes.”

We Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity also performed due diligence and were first off the mark with “Proof Bush Fixed the Facts,” May 4, 2005.

Just Another M$M Whore..

"I think there are a lot of critics who think that [in the run-up to the Iraq War] . . . . if we did not stand up
and say "This is bogus, and you're a liar, and why are you doing this,"
that we didn't do our job.

I respectfully disagree. It's not our role."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid,

QUOTE OF THE DAY.... Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada.

Reid says he expects the tactic of gentle persuasion to work best, given the size of his Senate Democratic flock and the political divergences within it. "I don't dictate how people vote," he said in an interview this month. "If it's an important vote, I try to tell them how important it is to the Senate, the country, the president ... But I'm not very good at twisting arms. I try to be more verbal and non-threatening. So there are going to be -- I'm sure -- a number of opportunities for people who have different opinions not to vote the way that I think they should. But that's the way it is. I hold no grudges."

I don't doubt Reid is widely liked and admired within the caucus. But "gentle persuasion" is rarely a recipe for party discipline.

There have been plenty of Senate Majority Leaders in history who members feared and wouldn't dare cross. Reid isn't one of them.

After this admission, that he can't or won't do the job, shouldn't the words 'I therefore resign' be forthcoming? These are very serious times, with challenges and opportunities such as the Democrats have not seen in many decades and he offers a genteel style over real substance.

Well, I guess I should be glad Reid at least has a realistic assessment of his skills and style - imagine how embarrassing it would be if he thought he was being a hard-ass, kickin' butt and takin' names?

Now if only I could understand why he thinks cajoling folks to do the right thing is sufficient for Senate Majority Leader.

Mirror,Mirror on the wall..

All she did was secede from Alaskan politics and expose her hypocrisy. People like little Willie Kristol
will love her for this. Normal people will think it’s a skit from SNL. She a very odd duck and she’s
head over high heels in love with herself. And if she went away, who would Greta stalk?

WaPo Does Damage Control After Cash-For-Access Scheme Leaks

By Versha Sharma - July 2, 2009, 12:21PM

This morning, Politico published a story detailing an interesting flier apparently being passed around DC health care lobby circles: a dinner invitation from the Washington Post at the house of CEO and Publisher Katherine Weymouth, selling access to its news and editorial staff and top Obama officials for $25,000 to $250,000. A health care lobbyist passed the missive on to Politico staff because he felt "it's a conflict of interest for the paper to charge for access to, as the flier says, its 'health care reporting and editorial staff.'"

Two and a half hours after the story was published, executive editor Marcus Brauchli sent an internal memo entitled "Newsroom Independence," in which he stated that the news department will not be attending the dinner. The sentiment echoes the statement WaPo spokesperson Kris Coratti made to Politico:

The flier circulated this morning came out of a business division for conferences and events, and the newsroom was unaware of such communication. It went out before it was properly vetted, and this draft does not represent what the company's vision for these dinners are, which is meant to be an independent, policy-oriented event for newsmakers.

As written, the newsroom could not participate in an event like this.

Read the full text of Brauchli's memo and the original flier after the jump. More....
